What is spatial audio navigation?

Spatial audio navigation uses our natural ability to locate sounds in space to provide directional navigation through audio. AudioDimension applies advanced algorithms to audio so that the brain perceives sound as coming from a specific direction in 3D space. When navigating, the audio appears to come from the direction you need to go and continuously adapts as you move.

Do I need special equipment to use AudioDimension Spatial Navigation?

Currently, our AudiNav app is available for iOS. You need an iPhone running iOS 17 or later and compatible Bluetooth headphones, including AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. We are also working on an Android version and on the SANDe F1 open-ear headset.

Is spatial navigation only for blind or visually impaired people?

No. Our research and development was originally targeted at helping blind and visually impaired individuals navigate independently, but AudioDimension spatial navigation is designed for everyone. The same hands-free, eyes-up guidance can benefit pedestrians, cyclists, tourists and many other users.

What is AudiNav and how do I get it?

AudiNav is AudioDimension’s consumer navigation app that lets you navigate while listening to music. Instead of relying on a map on the screen, you select your destination and follow the directional sound while keeping your phone safely in your pocket. AudiNav is currently available free for iOS and requires compatible Apple AirPods.

Can I use AudioDimension while listening to my own music or podcast?

Yes. This is one of the key ideas behind AudioDimension. Instead of interrupting your music with continuous spoken navigation prompts, spatial audio navigation can use the audio itself as the directional guide. The sound appears to come from the direction of your destination.

Does it work indoors or only outdoors?

The currently available consumer solution uses GPS and therefore works outdoors. AudioDimension has also developed an indoor navigation system based on Ultra-Wideband technology, or UWB, and is exploring applications with potential partner locations.

Can AudioDimension technology be embedded in other devices?

Yes. AudioDimension offers technology that can be integrated into smart glasses, earphones and other wearable devices. The algorithms are designed for very low latency and real-time spatial audio applications, making them suitable for integration into a range of connected products.

I already have 3D audio on my phone or earbuds. What is the difference?

Most 3D audio technologies are primarily designed to create immersive experiences for music, entertainment or gaming. Navigation has different requirements: sound positioning must be precise, responsive and extremely low latency. AudioDimension’s technology has been developed specifically with spatial navigation in mind.

Can I use AudiNav on a bike?

Yes. AudiNav includes a dedicated bike mode that takes different travel speeds into account. The objective is to allow cyclists to receive directional guidance through sound rather than continually looking at a phone screen.

What is SANDe F1?

SANDe F1 is AudioDimension’s open-ear headphone concept with built-in audio navigation. It combines Bluetooth audio with spatial navigation and is being developed for use with both iOS and Android devices.

Are there smart glasses with AudiNav?

Great questions! There should be since music navigation adds a cool needed function to smart glasses. AudioDimension’s navigation technology is particularly well suited to smart glasses and other wearables because navigation can be delivered through audio without requiring the user to look at a conventional screen. We are working toward integration with some wearable-device manufacturers.

Is AudioDimension a charity?

AudioDimension is a for-profit company. At the same time, part of its development work focuses on technologies that can help blind and visually impaired people navigate more independently and on making these technologies increasingly accessible.
